Code Read Donates 2,000 Books to Underserved Youth in Los Angeles

Code Read, a youth-led nonprofit, has made a significant impact by donating 2,000 new books to Canterbury Ave Elementary, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. This initiative is part of the organization's broader mission to enhance youth literacy by providing free books to children in underserved communities. Since its inception in 2016 by Mackenzie Krestul, Code Read has distributed over 50,000 books, addressing the stark disparity in book access that affects children's academic success and lifelong learning.

The importance of this donation is highlighted by research showing that children in economically disadvantaged areas have access to only one age-appropriate book for every 300 children, compared to an average of 13 books in more affluent households. Furthermore, children with access to 100 books at home have a 90% chance of completing 9th grade, a stark contrast to the 30% chance for those in bookless homes. Code Read's approach not only increases book access but also empowers children by allowing them to choose their own reading materials, a method proven to enhance engagement and enjoyment in reading.

Mackenzie Krestul, the founder of Code Read, emphasizes the transformative power of books, stating, 'Every individual deserves to have books in their own home—books that resonate with them, igniting a passion for reading.' The upcoming book fair at Canterbury Ave Elementary on April 3rd will enable each student to select two new books, fostering a personal connection to reading and learning.

Supported by her family and grants from organizations like The Nora Roberts Foundation and the Walmart Foundation, Krestul's vision extends beyond current achievements. Code Read is launching a capital campaign for a custom Bookmobile, aiming to expand its reach to Head Start centers, children's hospitals, and more, further democratizing access to books.
