New Initiative Launches to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Kyrgyzstan

The Footage Foundation, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Public Diplomacy Programs in Kyrgyzstan, has introduced the PowerTools program, a pioneering initiative designed to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) in the Kyrgyz Republic. This program not only aligns with U.S. foreign policy objectives in the region but also seeks to foster accountable governance, stability, and counter transnational threats like human trafficking through a multifaceted approach.

At the heart of the PowerTools initiative is a partnership with the Kyrgyz El Agartuu Public Association, a local civil society organization. Together, they aim to elevate awareness about GBV, advocate for meaningful policy reforms, encourage cross-sector collaboration, and secure increased funding for organizations supporting survivors. Dr. Kristen Ali Eglinton, the Executive Director and co-founder of Footage Foundation, underscores the program's focus on enhancing policy dialogue and crafting actionable solutions based on thorough needs assessments.

The program's methodology includes a series of strategic steps starting with a comprehensive needs assessment to pinpoint existing gaps in GBV prevention efforts. This will be followed by a series of training sessions, including webinars and workshops, designed to share innovative storytelling techniques and advocate for cultural norm shifts. A Stakeholder Summit will also be convened to facilitate policy-making dialogues among government officials and civil society representatives.

Nurzhan Tulegabylova from the Kyrgyz El Agartuu Public Association highlights the program's potential to transform societal attitudes towards GBV and dismantle stereotypes surrounding survivors. Ajay Rao of the U.S. Embassy points to the global significance of the initiative, especially during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, emphasizing the power of international collaboration in addressing such pervasive issues.

The PowerTools program stands as a beacon of hope for not only Kyrgyzstan but also for other regions grappling with GBV. Its innovative approach, combining local insights with international support, could serve as a blueprint for similar efforts worldwide.
