Palmdale to Host Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk to Combat Healthcare Disparities

The upcoming Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk in Palmdale marks a significant effort to combat the challenges faced by individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic disorder that disproportionately affects African American and Hispanic-American communities. Scheduled for February 22, 2025, at Pelona Vista Park, the event aims to raise awareness, foster community support, and address the systemic healthcare disparities that have long plagued SCD research and treatment.

SCD causes red blood cells to become sickle-shaped, leading to severe health complications, including chronic pain and organ damage.
